5 Tips For Spending The New Year In A New House

5 tips for a holiday moving day

Here are 5 tips for spending the new year in a new house.

Set Up Rentals & Utilities Before The Moving Day

  1. If you need to rent a moving truck, make sure you make a reservation! The same goes if you need movers to do the work. Some businesses may be scheduling several weeks out, so you better reserve a spot early. I always suggest looking into rentals and movers at least a month before. This is especially important during holiday seasons. Often businesses have days they close to allow employees to stay with their family. You do not want to set up your move on a day everything is closed!

  2. You may also need to rent or purchase appliances for your home, if they are not included in the asking price. This includes things like a furnace, hot water tank, fridge, stove and more. Make sure you talk to your agent at purchase time, so that you understand all the things you will need to buy or rent for your new home. One of the worst feelings during a move is being all sweaty, finishing your work, and realizing you have no hot water tank. It has happened to many people who purchase homes without good advisors. Do not let this happen to you. Select the best team of lawyers and agents that you possibly can for your deal. They will not forget the finer details like these.

  3. Similarly, make sure to put the utilities are in your name before the moving day. Some things can be changed over by your lawyer, but not everything. Make sure you ask the lawyer what services you need to switch over. If you do not, you will walk into a house with no electricity, no water or heat. During a holiday or winter time move, that could be disastrous. The city may not be open to change over your utilities for days. During that time, you will either be very cold, or living in a hotel!

    Check Over The Home’s Condition

  4. On move in day, also on the day before during your final walkthrough, check out the condition of the property. Make sure appliances work and the light bulbs are still there. Sometimes sellers try to pull a fast one on buyers. As long as you catch the issues with the home quickly, either the seller or your title insurance company should cover the cost to fix the issue.

Get To Know Your Neighbours Over The Holidays

  5. It is the holiday season and you have something to celebrate. Plan a party and invite all your friends and family. Go to your new neighbours' homes and invite them as well. A party is a great way to introduce yourself to the neighbourhood. This will make you feel more at home in your new area, and will let you meet people to borrow some sugar from, when you need it!
